Traditional Drawing (Week Eighteen - David Hyde)

This week we carried out further value studies, trying to further enhance our work and identify different elements in a composition.

The thing I found most difficult was getting the darkest values onto the page, this was mainly because when I block out dark values the pencil on the page makes it go blotchy, whereas, if I built up tone progressively with various grades of pencil it would have added to the detail.

In the future, I will chose to build up tone with various grades for the best result.

Traditional Drawing (Week Seventeen - David Hyde)

This week we were tasked with creating thumbnail sketches at the New walk museum, then take one further.

I decided to go with the main dinosaur exhibit, I chose this design because of its intricacies along with the tonal variation that I was able to observe during the study.

It was recommended that I did either the hippo skull, beaked dinosaur or the velociraptor looking dinosaur. So I decided to take the former forward.

 This week we were tasked with composition, creating thumbnail sketches to develop a fully realised image.

My favourite composition was incorporated into the triangular composition.

The hardest thing for me was to develop the same tone throughout an image.

For example the leaf in the piece was hard to maintain the same tone with the specific pencils I used.

Traditional Drawing (Week Fifteen - David Hyde)

This week, I was tasked with shading techniques - executing various ways of shading objects.

For the class drawing task, I went with hatching and general motions with my pencil to build up tone.

Having more control over my pencil meant I could get more precise perspective and tonal density.

One thing I find difficult is to control softer pencils, for me it is way more difficult to create crosshatching and various other shading techniques because of how it contacts the paper. Furthermore, in doing so it looks very blotchy, but it is needed because harder graphite can only go so dark.

Traditional Drawing (Week Eleven - David Hyde)

This week, I decided to enhance my shading task by creating a separate piece.

I chose a vice/clamp as my object of choice.

After initially smudging, I switched to cross hatching, which gave an overall better result.

One thing that did throw me off and has happened numerous times when drawing in the past, I tend to draw with my sketchbook at an angle, which more often than not skews the drawing, in future I will make sure to use a board or sit straight on to make sure this doesn't happen.

 Today we went over the shading and tonal value task.

Unlike my other pieces
 of work, I didn't particularly like this one. Mainly because I found the density of values hard to read. The white teapot was difficult to bring out without making the background visible.

For future examples, I will stick to my regular shading and build up tone as I go.

In today's lesson, we went over drawing with ellipses, at first, I didn't draw the ellipses on my drawing, which made the final outcome more difficult. However, when I went back to add them to the construction, it made the drawing easier to understand. Additionally, it helped me add directional shading, which was round the curvature of the object.
